Farm animal microbiota
Environment of farm animals in commercial production differs from that to which original animal species have adapted during millions years of evolution. If we admit that we want to produce animal protein for human population at acceptable costs, some conditions cannot be changed. However, there are still areas in animal production which can be modified. One of them is the manipulation of composition of gut and other compartment microbiota. Composition of microbiota of intestinal or respiratory tract can be affected by probiotic administration what results in an increase in natural resistance of farm animals to negative stimuli from their living environment. This consequently results in improved welfare and reduced need for therapeutic use of antibiotics. These ideas and way of thinking represent starting point of our research activities.
